Master of Laws Lecturer at FSH UIN Sunan Kalijaga Contributes to ICRC Course on the Law of Armed Conflict
Panel discussion on Multireligious Perspectives on Alleviating Suffering in Armed Conflict.
Yogyakarta – Prof. Dr. Lindra Darnela, S.Ag., M.Hum., a lecturer in the Master of Laws Program at the Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH), UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, served as a moderator in the certified course Humanity in War: The Law of Armed Conflict from a Multireligious Perspective. The ninth edition of the course was organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) together with FSH UIN Sunan Kalijaga and several partners, and took place on 19–22 October 2026 at the University Hotel Yogyakarta.
During the course, Prof. Lindra moderated the opening session. Her involvement reflects her expertise in International Law, one of the academic focuses of the Master of Laws Program.
Inter-Institutional and Interfaith Collaboration
The course was a collaboration between the ICRC, the Association of Scholars of Islam and International Humanitarian Law (INSANIA), FSH UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and the Center for Developing Cooperation and International Affairs (CDCIA). It brought together 40 participants, including religious leaders, academics, researchers, journalists, humanitarian workers, diplomats, policymakers, and government officials.
The program also featured an interfaith humanitarian panel discussion entitled “Multireligious Perspectives on Alleviating Suffering in Armed Conflict,” held at the Convention Hall, 1st Floor, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The panelists were Dr. Ahmed Al-Dawoody, Legal Adviser for Islamic Law and Jurisprudence at the ICRC in Geneva; Fr. Albertus Bagus Laksana, S.J., Ph.D., Rector of Sanata Dharma University; Venerable Nyanabandhu Sakya Sthavira (Dr. Burmansah, M.Pd.), Head of the Jinarakkhita Buddhist College (STIAB), Lampung; Prof. Dr. Drs. Chandra Setiawan, M.M., Ph.D., former Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Confucian Religion in Indonesia (Matakin); and Dr. Luh Gede Saraswati Putri, S.S., M.Hum., a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia.
The Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan, M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of a humanitarian perspective that transcends primordial boundaries, including religious differences, since the suffering caused by war knows no identity. Meanwhile, the keynote speaker, Muhammad Takdir, S.H., LL.M., Head of the Foreign Policy Strategy Agency at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, stressed that the greatest challenge to humanitarian protection is not the absence of rules, but weak compliance with the laws that states have already agreed upon.
Recognition for the Master of Laws Program
Christian Donny Putranto, S.H., LL.M., Deputy Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, described the course as a concrete follow-up to the cooperation between the ICRC and UIN Sunan Kalijaga, which was renewed through a Memorandum of Understanding on 22 August 2025.
Prof. Lindra Darnela’s participation in this international forum represents recognition of the expertise of the Master of Laws Program’s faculty in international law and international humanitarian law. The event also strengthens the program’s academic network with international institutions, which in turn can enrich teaching, research, and community engagement within the Master of Laws Program at FSH UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
